a lightning bolt strikes a tree, moving 20.0 C of charge through a potential difference of 100 MV. What energy was dissipated? What mass of water could be raised from 15.0 degrees Celcius to the boiling point and then boiled by this energy?

  1. I am guessing this is something for school?

    Then you may know:

A 1 volt charge carries 1 Joule of energy per Coulomb of charge.

Looking at it this way, you get 100,000,000 volts x 20 coulombs or 2 billion joules of energy.  Then convert that amount of joules to heat.

Start temperature 15°C.  End temperature 100°C. for a difference of 85°C.

If it is for school, you may be assuming 100% efficiency?

In practice, converting to heat (changing any one type of energy to another type of energy) is never 100% efficient.
