  1. My oldest son, who will be 10 next month, is the same way. He was tested for a learning disability at school and was found to have one. Have your mom talk to his teacher and see if he can be tested for a learning disability and go from there.

  2. I have learning disability's, I'm not good in Math and Reading. My mom got me workbooks to improve my math and reading skills. You can find workbooks at Target, Walmart, Toys R Us, Boarders, and at Barnes and Noble Book Stores. Also their is Leap Frog, that is also great for kids to learn their math and reading skills. I work in a preschool with 4 year old, I use Leap Frog games with the kids. They love the Leap Frog games, that doesn't get them frustrated from learning.

  3. Maybe take him to Kumon or Sulvan which they can help him with his rreading skills

  4. Many times children who have trouble reading are good in math because there are no exceptions to the rules like how to pronounce letter sounds. There are so many rules in reading, and on top of that they change for specific situations. Its hard to learn the different situations where letters make different sounds. Like how c and s can make the same sound, and c and k can also make the same sound. The likely reason he is good at math is because numbers are concrete. 2+2=4 will never change. Try work books from Walmart. They have all ages some with reading readiness in them. You may have to start out buying a lower level work book though. Good luck, and tell your mom, to look in to the public school system if he isn't already in a program with them during school hours.

  5. Ask the school psychologist to do testing on him to see if he qualifies for special education.

  6. Sylvan - or if you can't afford it - tutoring.  Ask the honor society students in your high school - a lot of times, they will provide free tutoring for elementary and middle school children.  Good luck.

  7. i have dyslexia and it was difficult for me to read about somethign i could car eless about. find him a nice topic about somethign h elikes rathe rit be pets, cars, computers, ect or trick him and play online games that requires a fair amount of reading and slowly build his reading stamina.

  8. Your brother's school should be helping him or referring him for help. Mom should talk with the teacher and counselors at the school. If that does not help then she needs to talk with her son's doctor. Maybe your familie's health insurance would cover a private testing facility. Your Mom would need to call the representative of the medical insurance she has. There should be someone who can give your family answers. Good luck.

  9. He  could be dyslexic. Children with dyslexia do much better by learning to sight read rather than phonetic reading. Dr. Seuss books for early learners are great as they are humorous and the words repeat. Yes, I know he is 10 but he still will enjoy these books. He can progress to other books as he becomes ready. Start out simple and read, read, read.

The human brain can read whole words by just sight. That is why people are able to do puzzles like word scrambles where words are jumbled. For example : usoeh = house. A person with dyslexia sees the words  like usoeh instead of house. That is why sight reading is better for them. If they see the word house and they view it as usoeh but are told that it is pronounced as house rather than trying to sound out what they see they will do better. It is basically memorization and word recognition.  Imagine if you see the word as usoeh and you try to sound it out using phonetics it would come out sounding like" you so huh". That is why there is so much frustration for someone with dyslexia. They know the phonetic sounds that each letter is supposed to make but when they apply it to what they see it doesn't make sense.

    Best wishes

  10. Boys tend to have a harder time with reading and/or writing. The best way is to get a tutor but that's probably expensive. It wouldn't hurt to have him checked for dyslexia.

  11. Any dyslexia in the family?

Get the book, Overcoming Dyslexia by Dr. sally Shaywitz and see what she recommends.

Also, what does your brother's school recommend?

It is really late to be noticing this poor reading? Why wasn't your ;mom worried long before now?
