Help?? Please?

I just got a new linksys G router yesterday, because my old router broke.I set it up,and did all the steps it said.I have two computers that use it right now.The main PC is the computer we set it up on,and my laptop is supposed to be connecting to it via a wireless adapter.both computers have Windows XP.

the main pc is working perfectly fine, and is able to connect to the internet with no problems, but my laptop will not.

On my laptop,it says that i am connected, and it has excellent signal strength, but i can not get online through any browser at all.

I made sure the IP adresses, default gateway, and subnet mask codes were the same on both computer, and i also made sure the DNS codes matched as well.I dont believe the problem is the adapter, because i tested it,and it said it was working perfectly. I know there is alot of questions like this, but i have yet to figure out what i can possibly do,or what i am possibly doing wrong.I also tried calling linksys, but they were no help.

  1. when you type the router local ip on your browser , does it log on from the laptop ? if not then it's encryption problem ; log on from your PC and go to the wireless network settings and disable encryption , it should work , but then you have to put sort of encryption so try wba

but there is something you said that i don't understand : "I made sure the IP addresses, default gateway, and subnet mask codes were the same on both computer"

all that is right but the ip address has to be different on each of them

do you get a balloon message telling you that there is an ip conflict?

enable dhcp and it should work

  2. I would note that the ip address for each individual computer must be unique. Therefor if you have the exact same ip address for each computer one or both will not function.

The subnet mask, gateway, and dns addresses should be the same however.

Also if you turn on DHCP on the router (it should be enabled by default) it will take care of it all for you. The computers should be set to obtain an ip address automatically.
