Hi.

I'm 5"0

I weigh 110 pounds.

In 8th grade.

The school volleyball tryouts are coming up. This Tuesday (it's Friday right now) and I want to know some tips that will make me better and make me make the team.

More than half of the 8th grade girls are trying out...about 30-35 girllsss..

My coach and I are close. But not THAT close...

My weak points is overhand serve. Do you think i will make it? I am really worried about me not making it and people teasing me about it. If I don't make it, got any combacks to people that tease me?

Any help anybody? Please and fast. =/

  1. ok so your determined, and that determination will lead you to success, first to stop an overhand serve you must prepare yourself and always assume it is you where the ball is going, and once it was serve, focus your attention thinking thats just a ball, stop it by crossing your right hand over your left, it will surely be hard at first especially when the server is good , but later you will realize it becomes easier and easier as they say challenge the best serve and be the server. tip stop the ball exerting less strenght hte yin yang principle, hard hit and receive it softly relaxed your muscles so that the ball will be directed to where you want it to be dont panic receive the ball as if receiving a balloon, make your hand firm but loose, just like extending your hand to a needy... also if you could reach the net try blocking even though its just a blaugh. be confident and think that you are still better, but dont be boastful always stay calm, focus and alert.. follow instructions always and do your best, pray and play the way you are and the way you want to be,ok

  2. Hola!  I'm in eight grade too, im also five foot, and i weigh about 90 pounds.  Did you try out last year??  I did, and it was a great experience.  Ok, so you think 35 girls is a lot?  Last year we had over 60 from 7th grade alone tryout, but then again, volleyball is huge at my school.  In the older leagues, overhand serves are very important, so that might hinder if you make the team or not, because the people that overhand serve can really power and get aces way better than under hand serves.  If people are going to tease you, then they must feel very unsecure about their play, and they think you are better, so just be the better person and say, yeah, i know, i need to work on it a little more.  thnx for the help guys.  the coach might see them and get upset, because volleyball is all about attitude.

  3. Coaches for kids at that age will look to see if the player can get the ball into play consistently. An underhand serve will do the trick. It's not important to have an aggressive overhand serve against teams who can't pass the ball properly yet.

The two most important things the coach will be looking for is:

    1) hustle

    2) underhand passing

Coaches want players who are willing to put the time and effort into improving their skills. If you're not good now, hard work will likely mean you'll put the time into getting better.

Since the second contact of every point is a bump, good passers will be invaluable to the coach. If you can get a few good ones when the coach is watching, you'll be able to sway him/her towards picking you.

Try outs are often chaotic. All you can do is work hard on that day and hope the coach sees potential in you.

    Good luck.

  4. You will be fine! just relax, and have fun. Work hard though. For your overhand serve, just toss it up really good and hit the c**p out of it! lol if u cant use ur hand very good, try using ur fist. not like punching it thought. Make sure it is flat and your thumb is not in the way becaus ehtat would hurt! lol Don't worry about people making fun of you. If they do then they are just retarded! lol and if they do just don't think anything of it! I am in 8th grade too and i just made the team yesterday! :]]

  5. Start with your toss! The toss of your overhand serve is key. Take the volleyball and everyday toss the ball right in front of your shoulder. If you need draw a line and use the line to help place the ball. You should do about 100 tosses everyday. Don't worry I have been in you situation before and once you get the toss down its all down hill from there.

After you get your toss down practice extending your arm. Make sure you toss the ball high enough so when you hit the ball your arm in completly straight.

    I hope this helps

  6. Well i think you can make it,don't worry aboutit just don't worry and do your best and of people tessing you well i really don't know!!!  :( Sorry.GOOD LUCK!!!BYE!!!

  7. Overhand serving is really essential. Here's the proper technique:

    1. TAKE YOUR TIME

The official rule is that you have 8 seconds to perform your serve. This is actually an eternity. Rushing your serve will only s***w up your routine, and cause you to lose serve and lose the point! So wait for the whistle!

    2. CREATE A ROUTINE

Your routine is perhaps the most important aspect of your “pre-serve”.Decide how many bounces, slaps, etc. you will do before going into the serving motions. This will give you some familiarity and make your serve consistent.

This also includes knowing how far you are from the service line (“serves go over, feet don’t!”)

    3. CHOOSE YOUR VICTIM

Picking a target on the floor will keep you from serving “out”.

Avoid good back row players, such as the libero as your victim. Find a possible hole on the floor (ex. in the middle of a cup formation)

    4. THE TOSS

This is the most important aspect of the actual serve.

Bring the ball in both hands in front of your body.

Toss with both hands and do not toss between your legs!

    5. FANCY FOOTWORK

Stand so that your feet are about shoulder width apart, with your foot the same side as your hitting arm slightly ahead of the opposite foot. Check: Are your feet/body facing your victim? Are your feet far enough from the service line?

6.THE TOSS CONTINUEDThrow the ball about 4 feet to double your height. Toss straight up- too far ahead/behind will throw off your serve.

    7. CONTACTING THE BALL

    Lead with your elbow.

Make solid contact on the top of the ball.

Don’t poke the ball-put some muscle into it!

NEVER, EVER fist the ball. Cast your palm as open as possible for the most surface area.

While contacting the ball, step with the foot opposite your hitting arm.

    8. BODY MOVEMENTS

This will give you the most balance and propel your body.

Pull your non-hitting arm down, and let your hips twist when you hit the ball.

    9. FOLLOW THROUGH

After hitting the ball, snap your wrist.

This will give you the top spin you want to make your serve difficult to receive. Drag your foot -the same side as your hitting arm-because you cannot take 2 steps.

I'd also advise starting close, in a practice settting, and working your way back behind the line, to built up arm strength,

Don't let the number of girls scare you...once you get to high school there can be as many as 100+ trying out. Go in there and play the way you know you can, being sure of every pass/serve/volley/hit (especially when the coach is watching!). Remain positive, call the ball, cheer on teammates, and the coaches will notice this kind of thing.

Hmm...comebacks, if someone who made the team approaches you, sacastically or forcedely reply "well, I just must not be as good as you", flattery should keep them up without bothering you.

If it's about the serve just say "you know, I've really been working on it, but I haven't got it nailed down yet. (Can you give me some tips?)"

    Best of luck!

  8. ok DONT worry about it! If you think your skills are kind borderlining the expectation to making the team then focus on the other things that you can completely control. Like...being loud on the court by calling your ball, everyone elses ball and calling out what's happening on the other side of the net. Coaches love that. Make sure that you are always jogging from point A to point B. NEVER WALK. Always shag balls when you're not asked and encourage your teamates when they miss and make a play. good luck!

  9. well you're in 8th grade so ppl are definetly gonna tease you..

i wasn't exactly the greatest at serving in 8th grade either...but just do really good on your hitting and bumping and you'll do fine! and just look like you wanna be there && that you're trying really hard.

30 girls really isn't that many for volleyball...since it attracks a lot of girls who have never done a sport before.

just be loud, call balls and wear a bright shirt soo you stand out!

    good luck darling.

  10. well for serve, make sure you open your shoulder up all the way to swing and maximize your force. also when you make contact with the ball, make sure you hit it with the middle of the plam of ur hand. and lastly SWING!!! power is whats going to make it over good luck!!!
