Question:

Help! Running dilemma!?

I have been training for almost a month to run a mile. I can run a mile in about 13 minutes. I always feel as though I can go further but my breathing goes out of control. Is there anything I can do to prepare myself for the mile I have to run tomorrow. It's my breathing, I'm worried about.

  1. I used to have he same problem. When i run i would have breathing problem and bad cramps at the end. I figured out the solution though. All you have to d is breath in your nose and out your mouth while you run.

  2. make sure that you are breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth. and be sure to hydrate!!

  3. please note ; you must breathe in through your mouth NOT your nose you need to take as much oxygen in as possible! nose breathing while out of breathe is not advisable.

  4. Try to take, big  deep, even breaths thought your mouth. Avoid panting or taking short shallow breaths. I like to slowly count 1-2 while I breath in and 3-4 while I breath out. Get a steady rhythm going and you will get more air. Practice while you are falling asleep or something so you can get a feel for what a "good breath" feels like before you race. At the start it should be easy to breath but as you know, when you get towards the end your really need to focus on not taking shallow breaths.

If this doesn't help, look at these links:

  5. inhale through nose two steps. exhale through mouth the next two steps. repeat until mile is finished. haha.

eat plenty of carbs the night before your run. eat a banana or an energy bar, drink plenty of water, but not too much, about two hours before you start. get adequate sleep. and remember to be optimistic about it, because you also need a tough mentality to run well.

  6. Get an inhaler, you might have asthma if your breathing gets that bad.

  7. Have some pasta for dinner tonight and don't have breakfast (or at least not milk) tommorow, tha pasta will give you energy for a long period of time (about tommorow morining) and nto eating reduced stomach cramps, and I know people who puke every meet because they had breakfast.

Breath in through your nose and out through your mouth so you don't inhale dust thats being kicked up from running. Just keep running everyday and try not to walk any and just push yourself. If you are a natural runner, then you will get faster quickly. Try to run in the morning so you have it out of the way and nothing comes up in the afternoon so you have to skip. Also, running with a partner is good because its harder to skip out because you feel like you're letting the other down. When you are done running hold both arms above you head and fold them like you would across your chest on top of your head to expand your lungs and breath easier. Be sure to do warm-up and cool down stretches before and after you run and get plenty of salt in your diet because you sweat it off running. Try to find a park with a track that is shady, its a lot easier on you and keep pepper spray on your belt, just incase.

I know that's alot and it may not fix your running tommorow, but it will help over time because all of this strengthens your body so your breathing will get better.
