  1. That is so nice of you!

You basically already have your letter here. Just change the wording a bit and add a couple of details.

    Dear Ms. _______,

I am about to graduate and I would like to write you a thank you letter. I didn't actually have you as a teacher, but you coached me for four years in volleyball and hockey. (Insert favorite memory.) You drove me to the rink at 6 am. You (some other great thing she did).

The letters of recommendation you wrote meant so much to me. Thanks to you, I got an incredible scholarship. (Insert a sentence about your future plans.)

You always went out of your way to be nice to me. I will never forget you.

    Your student,

    Name

Believe me, you don't need more than that. As a teacher, I would love to get this letter. It would mean more than any "teacher appreciation" gift I have ever gotten.

  2. Hey...take it from me, I've known one of my Directors since I started learning my instrument 7 years ago, I wrote him a thank you note and he sent me an e-mail back saying I made him cry. Don't worry about what to say, just let it come from the heart. It will be the most meaningful that way, even if you do feel like you're rambling, it's not some professional letter, it's a thank you card from the heart. The more you put your own voice and feelings in there (memories too!) the better and more meaningful it will be for them.
