Question:

Help! The pipes between my boiler (potterton) and my immersion tank clank very loudly?

each time I switch it to 'on', then, the boiler cuts off and has to be re-set (the manual says it has overheated). I am not working, and can't afford a plumber, so need to try and sort it out myself. Please help.

  1. The pump has probably failed. This causes the boiler to over heat as the water cannot circulate. Check first though there is enough water in the system as this can cause the same fault-if there is a water pressure gauge near the boiler it should be on 1 to 1.5 bar, you raise the pressure by opening a valve attached to a filling loop near this gauge. If there's no gauge the system will have an expansion tank at the top of the system [usually in the loft] check this has water in it.

  2. Hi,

I have worked on several potterton boilers, I agree with all the other issues on here, but firstly check the expansion tank, go in the loft and push the ball c**k, you should get a good solid flow, sometimes these seize up and are really easy to fix, email me if you need assistance. If this is working check the pump, you will see a s***w located on it, undo this and insert a screwdriver gently you should here it go round, sometimes if it is seized turn it with a large screwdriver and this will sometimes free it off. Thirdly check for air locks, go to the highest point and you will see a air bleeder normally close to your immersion tank unscrew this and check you have water present. Finally where do you live I know a lot of plumbers who aren't con artists and would be willing to help. Email me if i can help more.

  3. Could it be you have a build up of mineral deposits? Can you drain and flush the system. Look on the internet to see how to do that if you are unsure.
