My daughter is 6 1/2 years old and she still sucks her thumb. I know that it's starting to take an effect on her front teeth as they are starting to be crooked. How can I get her to stop sucking her thumb? I've tried other methods, what do you suggest?

  1. i suggest that u try to keep reminding her about it or have certain punishments or let her wear gloves for a few days and see what happens or talk to ur docter

  2. Ok, rub hot sause in her thumb so every time she tries to suck it, she wont like it and shell stop doing it.

  3. If she was younger it would be easy, Putting soap or anything like that wont work, only because they do know how to wash their hands at that age. I'm sure its worse at night...you can put something on her thumb, like a band aid or heavy duty tape or like someone had mentioned, a glove, only at night though, this way in her sleep being that she has the habit of sucking her thumb and not realizing it...this will help her to not suck her thumb because of it not feeling comfortable. As for the daylight hours...all kids like money, Reward her with a dime every hour that she doesn't suck her thumb, if she does...take a dime away. First you have to let her pick out a toy so when she has the money earned, she can buy it. you don't have to use a dime, it can be a quarter or what ever. This also teaches her to save at the same time. Also at night, you can tell her that you can tell if she messes with the tape and tries to pull it off, you will take 2 coins out. Glue the picture of the toy she wants on her "no thumb sucking jar". Incentives has always worked for me. good luck!!

  4. put some soap on ther thumbs and she'll knock that $#!t off REAL quick!

  5. Bribery!

There is nothing wrong with bribery in this case!

I sucked my thumb until I was 11 yrs old.  Nothing my mother tried worked.  She tried that bitter stuff, and I just washed it off.  Finally, it was $50 that did the trick (in 1981, that was tons of money!)

What does your daughter really really really want that you wouldn't otherwise consider getting for her?  Promise it to her if she can quit sucking her thumb !

  6. I was a thumb sucker growing up. My Mom and grandparents did everything they could think of; putting spicy, sour and bitter tasting things on my thumbs, making me wear gloved, sitting on my hands, bribing me with money, toy's and treats. Nothing seemed to work, and no one could figure it out, me included. Then one day an "Issue" came back from my early-early childhood and after facing it, I never sucked my thumb again. It was my safety from an insecurity that happened when I was still a toddler.  It may be that she is feeling insecure about something and she may not even remember from what, so talk to her and reassure her, don't punish her because that could reinforce her insecurity's
