Help! Trying to find a meaning an heritage/story about my boyfriends last name "WIerchowski".?

We know its polish, but we can't find anything on it, also he knows his family shortened the name somewhere along the line when they relocated from poland to america.... any help is appreciated!

  1. I would have to question if you typed the name accurately (as it is now).  NOTHING comes up using WLERCHOWSKI, even in the social security death index, ancestry, or google.

    Using Wierchowski, I find a few entries, and I am aware of other slight variations (personal friends).  Spelling variations would not necessarily be 'shortened'.

    If you can give specifics re a grandfather/ gr grandfather, it is very possible that they can be found in census records, which would give more info ie date of immigration, so forth.  To the best of my knowledge, it really is not that uncommon in Poland, as long as you include the variations.


  2. Wierchow is a place in Warsaw, Poland.

    So somebody with the last name Wierchowski has a name that originated in that place, it does not appear to be a shortened name.
