My mother has always wanted an Indian Ringneck - do you need to buy these in pairs and how bad are they for dander? I know eclectus parrots are thought to be the most hypoallergenic...is it best to just stick to getting one of them? or is better to get them as a pair?

Any help would be appreciated!

  1. I dont know about the dander stuff but i do know that if you want the parrot to be interactive with you and your family then just get one. If you don't have a lot of time on your hands to spend with it then get two of them. Goodluck.

  2. I have 3 ringnecks and they're about as clean as you'll find with a good disposition, intelligence and excellent talking ability (also our family's personal favorites).  They probably have a little dander as all birds do, but I haven't noticed any in 6 years.  Be advised they get highly attached to 1 person unless you all take turns handling them a little each day.  Sometimes they pick one person and that's it, no discussion.  (It works better to go see the birds before you buy and let them pick you out.)

The least advisable, although we have them and really like them, are cockatoos which have a natural "baby powder" you could be allergic to.  For that reason I'd avoid cockatiels even though they make good pet birds.
