Help! What was that big green bug???

Question

As I went out to my car this morning my daughter screamed when she saw this bug lying in the driveway. It was huge- it was green and fat- about the size of a thumb length-wise, a little rounder width-wise. It had black bulgy far set eyes and short, clear wings. It was so cool but I had never seen anything like it before. He really reminded me of the caterpillar from a bugs life after it turns into a butterfly! I had to go so I picked him up (he was very limp and couldnt really hold on to me) and put him on the grass so i wouldnt run over him. When I came back he was gone, so either he was ok or he made a tasty lunch for something. :( DOes anyone have an idea what he was?

It would be easier to guess if I had a location, but from what you said it sounds like it could be some sort of Cicada, especially with the size, far set eyes and clear wings. I can't say what species, though. The shape seems odd though and I'm not sure how a Cicada would look like a caterpillar. If you can give any more specifics or at least what state you found it in that would really help. Try whatsthatbug.com as well.

yea i saw the same thing on my porch. it was lying upside down it had huge legs black eyes and it was sort of greenish.
