I keep my home clean, and so i'm getting really wound up about the flies that are getting in!!

I've used fly killer, but am not happy about this as i have three young children.

Is there any spray/ chemical which will stop them coming in in the first place??

Thanks very much all! xx

  1. You've got loads of options, anyhting you need to plug in can be mounted out of there way anyhow. First thing you should try is one of them guards over the door that hangs down, cheap and retro way but should help.

No offence but have you looked for anything that may be attracting them? Does your bin live in the same room as the fly problem? We've got ours shut away in the cuboard under the stairs and it works well.

Best solution is one of these options, you should find something you can use here:

  2. Try placing a basil plant next to the door/window. Apparently the flies don't like the smell and won't come in. My Grandmother swears by this method.

  3. just bought Red Top Flytrap, type it into ebay to buy item.  Works well at trapping flies.

  4. get some flay tape which you hang next to your doors and the flies will be attracted to this which is safe  and orderless

  5. there are some fly catchers that you can hang up outside that work really well. you need to make sure you hang them far enough away and where there's good air flow because they can really smell sometimes. BUT they catch most of the flys before they even get to the house. then I usually use fly paper that hangs from the ceilings.

  6. Flies tend not to like strong-smelling herbs generally. Mint and Pennyroyal are supposed to be good, also Lemon Balm.

It might be fun for your kids if you got a few carnivorous plants too, like venus flytraps and pitcher plants.

  7. Flies are disgusting things, they land on the nearest poo and then straight into your house to vomit it up all over your dinner.

I kill them ina variety of ways. A homemade solution of bleach, washing up liquid and lemon juice in a squirty bottle is very effective. One squirt of that and they turn their toes up. Only good for when they are on the window.

The vacuum cleaner is good. Again when thery are buzzing up the window trying to get out. They try and stick to the glass before being sucked into oblivion.

Why not make your own fly paper. You will need some carpet tape that is sticky both sides. Add a smear of honey and pin it up outside. They'll come for miles to get stuck. Once finished with, burn it.

  8. to prevent flies from getting into your home you have to set bait stations down wind (allowing for windshift,) at a point far from the house.

flies are like people, they seek better surroundings than they find outside, they want to escape heat, and they want to escape cold. your house is usually set to make it nice for you and they will also like it.

what i'm talking about, setting the traps away from the house, down wind will work. i have used it extensively in iraq to free forward operationing bases from flies.    the key is to use enough, and to put them close enough together, and yes they stink like a corpse

email me if you need further instruction

  9. i have a venus flytrap, although its not very prolific

  10. just keep ur curtains drawn if you are having ur windows open and lights on you are going to etract a lot of flies and its the summer anyway the is flys every where u just have to pu up wih i i guess why ont u buy some house plants that etract and eat them

  11. I haven't ever had much of an issue with flies.  Occasionally I get 1 in the house and it's annoying.  I would say, if you need to keep window or door open, make sure you have a good screen.  You should have a screen or security door also.  Once you get them out of the house, make sure you are not leaving food out or dishes in the sink (unless you rinse them off good).  Make sure to take out garbage regularly, especially if you have food in there that is rotting or open containers of food.  That should be good enough to keep most of them away.
