Hello everyone,

I need some help. Which one of these sentences sounds more grammatically correct? And why so did you choose the one you did? English buffs are a plus.

1) ..., my major would be Art with an emphasis geared toward the general arts [or] illustration.

2) ..., my major would be Art with an emphasis geared toward [either] the general arts [or] illustration.

Thank you for your time and patience!

  1. definatly the 2nd one

  2. 1 sounds better bc either and or should no be in the same sentence

  3. I think neither should be used.  They are a bit wordy.  Try

"....my major would be Art with an emphasis on general arts or illustration."

I'm not sure why you have the [ ] around the word or.  I am a Middle School English teacher.  Hope this helps.

  4. I also prefer the second; however, I think it would be better with "emphasis on" rather than "emphasis geared toward".

My major would be Art, with an emphasis on either the general arts or illustration.

  5. I'm not an english buff (biochemistry major here), but I think the second sentence flows better.

  6. Personally I would drop some words:

My major would be art, with an emphasis in either general arts or illustration.
