Question:

Help! Wireless connectivity for a college dorm?

Well I just learned that my college dorm will only have wireless connectivity OUTSIDE, in the patio! This was a shock to me- I thought they would know we will be needing the internet from our rooms for assignments.

So any ideas? Is there something I can easily hook up in my room to get connectivity to the internet??

Thanks!

  1. You need a wired or wireless connection.  If you don't have access to either then a data card from your local cellphone provider may be the only option.

  2. Your room will be wired for a LAN ethernet port. Well it most likely will unless your school is still in the stone age. A lot of dorms aren't wired for wireless. My wireless only worked for about half the semester, the rest of the time we just plugged in. Its not a big deal really as your laptop won't leave your desk very often, and there are lan ports all over when you do.

  3. plug your computer into an ethernet port. look around on the net. there are diy projects out there where you can build a much more sensitive wifi antenna for your pc out of things like a pringles can. that might give you the range you need to get to the wireless signal on your patio
