Question:

Help With An HD-DV Camera?

I have just recently got an HD-DV Camera for Christmas, and have filmed a few 'short' films. I've uploaded them to a document on my computer and attempted to 'play around with' them in Windows Movie Maker 2.1, but when I attempt to open any of the files a warning pops up and states that the file types are unsupported. Is there a way to 'translate' these into a supported file type, so I can work with them on WMM2.1?

  1. It would be very helpful if you were to list the exact name of the camera - brand, and the specific model number or designation (like "Panasonic AG-HVX200", etc.) because then the video people (us) can give you more specific information. I've been doing a LOT of studying up on this subject - I know a lot more than the so-called "average Joe" on the topic, and I'm still learning a lot. Good luck with your movies... now which camera is it?

BTW: you MIGHT have to purchase some software to edit your movies, but without specifics as to which camera and how it "behaves" we won't be able to help you as much - thanks!

  2. If the "HD" you mean is hard drive, you may need to install a codec that came on the disc in the box.

If the "HD" you mean is "high definition" and "hard disc", that camera stores high definition video in AVCHD format. WMM cannot read these files. Not all video editors can edit AVCHD from all camcorders. Sony Vegas for Sony camcorders, Adobe premiere for Canon - but you need to check what you buy before you use it.

If the "HD" you mean is "high definition" from a miniDV tape based camcorder, you need to import using a firewire cable connected to the firewire port on your computer.

I don't understand what "uploaded the files to a document" means.

If you transferred the video from a DVD based camcorder and copied the VOB files over, you need to use a DVD ripper like HandBrake and put the DVD back in the optical drive of your computer. You may need ISOBuster.

You have not provided enough information to provide any more assistance.
