Help With HD Gaming?

Okay I'm trying to play my PS3 on this 42 inch vizio tv. I don't know whats wrong, the graphics suck but I have an hdmi cable, but I don't understand how to format my screen to fit the picture right. Oh and its not the game either because its Call of Duty 4. So how should I get the t.v. and system to be compatible together to get that high definition

under settings.. display settings.. output to HDMI.. then automatic.. itll detect and use the highest/best setting for you
