Help With My Gerbil?

My gerbil, scabbers, is very old (He's 4 and a half years) and I know he hasnt got long left, he seems to have developed what looks like wet tail, although I didnt know gerbils could get it but I had a hamster that had it years ago and it looks the same, also it seems like one of his back legs has gone to sleep and everytime he walks its like hes going to fall over, I dont know what I should do, I know a vet wouldnt be able to help him as he's so old but do you think it would be fairer on him if I had him put to sleep? He still seems happy in himself and tries to get around and is happy to be stroked, he doesnt seem in pain at all and thats the only thing holding me back. Should I have him put to sleep or just let him see out his remaining days or weeks himself? Help! xx

  1. i also have a gerbil named scabbers but anyway...

as long as he isnt in pain i would let him enjoy the rest of his life.  but if he seemed to get worse and look uncomfortable then i would put him down to put him out of his misery.

because he is so old i dont know if you would want to try this or not-

  2. Well if he look like hes in pain bring him to vet to get a check if it best to put him to sleep do it but the vet maybe can give him a few more months but he is at the end of his life

  3. sos but i think its his time so sorry but if hes in pain then u should sorry but at least u treat him well hes got to 4 and a half thats very rare for gerbils and ur thinking of him ur a nice person

  4. Well, there is a special medicine that you can get from petsmart and all you do is put 1 or 2 drops in its water bottle and tht will help them not have wet tail.

  5. if he is still happy and not in pain/agony he is still ok. but if either of these develope then................it might be time
