Question:

Help With Thrush (and thrush buster)?

I'm pretty sure my horse has thrush, as there (was/is) a slight odor coming from his hooves and black "puss." Anyways, I picked up some Thrush Buster and I've been putting it on and it has seemed to help (the odor now seems different and I think it's from the Thrush Buster) but now my horse's hooves are pretty much all black and purple. It's pretty annoying and it's hard to tell if the dark substance is more puss or if it's the Thrush Buster...it pretty much stained his hooves. I gave him a bath today and ran the hose over his hooves while I used a stiff brush to try and get it off but it didn't help much at all. Any help? I don't want to use it again so if the thrush isn't gone, how else can I get rid of it (home remedies or something?)

The farrier has never said anything about thrush so I don't know but if we had other farriers around he wouldn't be my first choice. Anyways next time the vet comes out for shots and all I'm going to have them look at the thrush problem, but if anybody knows how to get rid of the thrush buster and how to cure this thrush thing, please help :)

  1. it will be fine. thrush is from standing in urine or poo. doesnt mean ur not clean. now if there is puss present that means you have an infection in the frog. it needs cut out with a knife.but its hard to say with out actually seeing it. if ur farrier didnt notice this than its time to get anew one. keep cleaning it out with warm water and soap[. do not use a wire brush! u will bruise the underneath. just use a hoof pick.

  2. You really need to get a vet out there; or expericened farrier.

that doesnt sound like thrush he/she shouldnt have puss or be really dark black unless thats his hooves natural color.

if he has cracks in his hooves. you might have a fungual problem try. diging it out with a hoof pickor nail just a LITTLE bit and put iodine in it:D do this like two mabey three times. total then...

this may sound funny but all so try soaking his foot in orange juice the natualr acid will kill any stuff in there. do it once everyday.

and the bleach sugestion is also great idea:D

but dont do it to offten it's not so good for the hooves.

mak esure your putting rain maker on there hooves every other day this will help to:D

  3. thrush is caused by standing in wet damp areas and is basically the hoof rotting. keeping your horse in a dry area is also something that should be done. hooves need to breathe.

  4. for thrush, i always mix up 1 part bleach to 9 parts water, and spray til the hooves are soaked, 2 times a day.  doing this, however, i have to smear some hoof cream on there.  the bleach dries the hooves out, otherwise.

    hope this helps.

  5. I prefer to use 10% iodine for a case of thrush.  I have never had to use more than 2 treatments.  You can also use 7% iodine.  It has to be ordered through a vet where I live...I don't know about where you are.

Anyways...you clean the hoof with water and a brush.  Making sure you get all 'mud' and poo clumps out.  You can pat it dry if you want to...but it's not necessary.  Then spray or cover the bottom of the hoof with the iodine...frog too.  Make sure it gets in every nook and cranny.  Keep it off the coronet band.  Iodine dries it out.  As soon as you cover the sole of the hoof...you can put it down.  It will kill the thrush on contact and will also harden the sole.

Check the next day...clean the hoof again with water and a brush.  If you detect the smell or signs of thrush, cover with iodine one more time.  You should not need another treatment until the thrush comes back again in the future.  Most of the time...I've only had to do it one time, and the thrush was gone.

This will stain you and the horse.  Wear gloves and clothes you won't mind messing up...should you splatter or spill.  It will wear off the horse within a couple of days.

  6. i know people take nistatine (spelled wrong) for thrush but it may be different for horses. I think it would be better just to take him to a vet instead of letting the people of the internet decide.

  7. I've dealt with a few mild cases of thrush and never has there been any puss. Usually it's just soft. I would suggest having a vet or farrier out, it sound like it could be an abscess. My farrier told my thrush buster, thrushex, etc. are useless and I got some mellaluca oil from him that works rather well.
