I'm going to buy a regular DVD player with ( HDMI) input.

can I play my good collection of DVDs ( standard definitions)

or this player can only play HD DVDs since it has a n HDMI input?

if it can play regular DVDs, how the quality would be ? is there any improvements?? is the HDMI cable useful in this case?

I already have an HDTV ( SONY BRAVIA) HD READY.

  1. Yes it can play your old collections of dvd's. it should be backward compatible. with HDMI, im sure it will upscale the standard resolution from 800 x 600 to 1920 x 1080 pixels.

  2. A regular DVD player plays just that...DVDs.  And in the days before Blu Ray or HD DVD, higher end DVD players already had this kind of connection, HDMI.

The benefit of using a HDMI cable is to allow a direct digital hook up between the player and the TV.  The quality is suppose to be better than any other hook up because of the upscaling and cleaner image.  Another benefit of the HDMI is a single cable hook up to carry the picture and sound information.

Blu Ray and discontinued HD DVD players would required the HDMI cable to benefit from its 1080P image.  These players would also play DVDs at the upscaling quality.

  3. Yes it will play standard DVD, in fact that's all it will play.

With HDMI, it will be an upscaling DVD, the quality will be much better than connecting via SCART, but it won't be anywhere near HD or Blu-Ray quality.
