Hello everyone,

I have a dilemma. When I was an undergrad about 2 yrs ago, I made a couple of good grades and all but never asked for recommendations. Now, I want to apply to Grad school and they are asking me for Teacher's recommendations. What do people like me or those that after several years want to start Grad school do and DO NOT have teacher's recommendations? Any advice I will be very thankful for....

Thanks in advance.

  1. My advice to you is to track down your old professors who gave you good grades and ask them for letters. If you were in a big class and they don't know your name, what you do is you make an appointment to see them and bring several of your old essays/tests to show them how well you did in their classes. Then, you ask them to write letters for you. Trust me, it works.

  2. i was in the same position when i applied to grad school can you ask an employer? i was in a club on campus so i was able to ask the pres of the club for one...but i would suggest an employer.

did you work with an advisor at your undergrad institution? you can try them as well.

  3. Do you have any transcipts? You may be able to use those. I would also try to track down your teachers. Call the school you attended and they will be able to tell you this information!

    Good luck and congrats!

  4. It's not optimal, but unless you're going to take more undergraduate courses, you need to get in touch with the faculty for whom you did well, remind them of who you are, and ask if they'd be willing to write a recommendation. If the classes were small, it shouldn't be a big deal. If the classes were large, it would help if you could offer to send graded papers and/or exams from their classes.

Don't worry, it's not uncommon for students to come back for recommendations a couple of years after they graduate.
