  1. Use scissors to cut the chunks keeping a fingers width away from the skin.  Use a comb not a brush.  Don't try to pull the matted hair out all in one stroke.  Hold the mat in your fingers to prevent pulling it and comb at it in short strokes until it starts to loosen.  This is going to take several days.  The mats are pinching the dogs skin and are sensitive.  It can only tolerate some much of this until it become unbearable.  Either move to a different spot on the body or wait several hours for the irritated skin to settle down before attempting another go at it.  Thanks for rescueing, good luck!

  2. your going to just have to shave him Bald so his fur can grow back them brush it on a daily/weekly Basiss topreventt this happening again

  3. If his fur is really badly matted, then you may want to take him to a professional groomer. The groomer can try and get the mats out and salvage as much of a haircut as possible. But it will be harder to do it yourself and it may be easier to shave his hair real short and wait for his fur to grow back.

  4. if badly matted i would let a professional do it.

  5. Are you sure it's a Jack Russell?  I'm only asking because JRT's have short hair and it's very difficult to get matts in short haired dogs, I own two short hairs and no matter how dirty they get they never get matted fur.

If you don't know what you're doing, take the dog to Petsmart and have them groom him and shave him if possible.  You don't know how the dog will react you could get bitten, leave it to people who know what their doing.

Try shampooing him first and washing him and brushing, if that doesn't work take him to be clipped and start over.

  6. For a wire haired JRT, the best tool to use on him is a comb. They sell metal combs at petstores, which is good because you won't have to worry about teeth breaking off of a plastic one. I've never heard of this breed being matted, so if the tangles aren't too bad, you will probably be able to just comb them out.

If there is matting that won't comb out, then you can cut the mats out.
