As of lately I have thought of different career options. I am considering looking at becoming a special educator. The problem is I can't seem to find a program to enter to become a special education teacher. I don't want to work with specificlly blind or deaf students and that seem to be the only special education program that Sac State offers. Maybe they don't offer what im looking for or maybe I don't know exactly what i'm looking for. So for you special educators or people who know much about the career. What did you do? What colleges? Any advice in what I need to do to become a special education teacher?

  1. I am a special ed teacher in Oklahoma what you need to do is find a college that has teacher prep classes within that instution they will have a program to teach special ed. There are several other programs out there besides teaching the blind and deaf. Look at all areas and know that if you do become a special ed teacher that the paperwork will kill you. In Oklahoma I am qualified to teach Mentally Retarded, Learning Disabled and Emotional Disturbed kids.

  2. Many colleges offer Special Education programs.  I currently teach SPED classes at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.  At our University we offer a B.A. in mild moderate  Special Education.  This degree allows you to work within different disablity groups such as mental retardation, behavior disordered, learning disabilities, autism, etc.  You may want to look at many college programs which now offer online degrees.  Be aware that IDEA now requires that all teacher candidates pass profeciency tests.

  3. Sac. State most definitely does offer a credential program.

You first have to get a BA and then get your special education credential in mild/ moderate or moderate/ severe disabilities.
