(NH4)2CO3 --> NH3 + CO2 + H2O --> 2NH3 + CO2 + H2O

i have no idea how to balance the left side.

  1. (NH4)2CO3  ---->  2NH3 + CO2 + H2O

    You need not balance the left side. If you notice, you have 2 N's, 8 H's, 1 C and 3 O's on both sides. :)


  2. What's to balance?  You have the correct answer on the extreme right and extreme left.  The middle stuff can be deleted.

    Ammonium carbonate decomposes to ammonia, carbon dioxide, and water.

    Add up the numbers of atoms on each side -- they should be equal:

    (NH4)2CO3 has 2 Nitrogen, 8 hydrogen, 1 carbon, and 3 oxygen

    2NH3 + CO2 + H2O has 2 nitrogen, 8 hydrogen, 1 carbon, and 3 oxygen -- balanced!

  3. (NH4)2CO3 → 2NH3 + H2O + CO2

    That's all it is.
