I am turning 13 now, and i want to turn my old "playroom" into a library for my ever-growing book collection. The room has a futon that takes up a lot of space (i have to keep it for when guests come). I am not sure if i want a bright, sunny little library, something old-fashioned, or what. Casn you help me out?

  1. Consider a few things first:

    1.  How much of a budget do you have for this re-do?

    2.  How much time are you willing to put into it?

    3.  Are you the only person who will be using the room besides guests?  (In other words, who has the final say on what stays, what goes, what can come in new, etc.?)

I'd start by eliminating any and all 'toy' type of things from the space.  If the room is painted something girl-ie or too frilly, you might want to consider something more neutral for the walls ~ like a warm, rich tan.

A futon is a fairly 'modern' looking piece of furniture, so you'd be better served keeping in that style of library vs. doing something more old-fashioned.  Find some cool, funky throw pillows for the futon,

an area rug for the floor,

    and some colorful lampshades

A bookshelf that looks like a sculpture would be awesome, but it might not be practical for the space.

Even if you use an existing bookshelf or a built-in, you can paint it a fun color.
