Question:

Help determine my philosophy?

I do not believe in supernatural deities/god. I deny the existence of supernatural deities/god. I do not believe in the supernatural. I deny the existence of the supernatural.

I have long considered myself an atheist but warring with people about pagan atheism on yahoo answers ( I consider pagan atheism an oxymoron) has made me realize I am not an atheist or I am not only an atheist because I not only deny the existence of gods but I deny the existence of the supernatural.

Am I a materialist? A naturalist? An infidel? A nihilist? I need some help here.

  1. read "Atlas Shrugged"

  2. maybe ur just secular.  but u have to ask yourself, just because there is no proof of something, can u say for certain that it is not true?  There is always a degree of uncertainty, so to say that u r certain that there is no god(of any type) is an act of faith in itself.     just a thought.

  3. This is a Good question. By my own personal interpretation,You are a man, who, by his own observations, education, and soul searching, has come to a conclusion that suits you and your needs. You need not even label it, or condemn or convert really--All you need to do is just be who your experience and your own research submit you should be.

Is is that important that you label yourself? Is it important that any of us do? Labeling and comparing only truly invite a warring nature. Do you need to believe that you are "right" in your conclusions, or can you just be content with finding your own truth and leave it at that. Actually, I think I just defined tolerance, in my ramble.

Contentment with your own way of being, and believing, without trying to condemn or convert is a pretty "all right" way of getting along in the world.

If you truly want to define yourself, do so, with the knowledge that it has no bearing, really on anyone else, except that you may alienate yourself from true interpersonal relations by putting up this wall that may deny other's realities, and imply your "rightness" and their wrongness".

You are most certainly welcome to your own interpretations of reality, as we all are, but why war with people over it?

Why not just accept your own, and other's interpretations as all part of the interwoven cloth of which we are all a part, and each thread is necessary to the integrity of the cloth as a whole. I am glad you submitted this question. It forced  me to define a theme that has also been present in my life, and to give myself a plan of action. Good luck with your  own personal exploration and research.

  4. Technically, you are still an Atheist: you lack a belief in god(s).

What Atheism doesn't do is say what you *do* believe in and accept. You sounded like a naturalist (which many Atheists are).

The Brights are a new movement that some Atheists are ascribing to. The assumption is that, if the word "g*y" helped homosexuals find general public acceptance, than perhaps atheistic naturalists could hijack a word with positive connotations in order find general public acceptance. It's a political movement defined by a specific set of criteria with a clear goal, not a new philosophy in and of itself.

  5. Maybe just an existentialist, someone who can only believe in the things that are present in time and space and what one experiences in those dimensions.  Doesn't mean that there is no supernatural though.  Many people sense that there is something beyond our limits of space and time.  As Paul said

"So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal."
