I highly recommend that you give "Spot Shot" a try.  It is amazing.  I have removed red punch from my son's white bedroom carpeting by spraying some of it on the stain.

You have been given several ideas so far, but just to add one more to the mix, you can try a drop or two of automatic dishwashing detergent. The detergent has a touch of bleach to it so will re-whiten the carpet - but I WOULD NOT advise using it on anything that is not COMPLETELY white.

I used bleach on my white counter tops for koolaid stains and the clorox turned the stains orange.  Figuring I had nothing to lose, seeing as how the countop was already ruined, I sprayed lime away on it and it came right out!  so if all else fails try lime away!  good luck!

try with Mr Clean magic eraser.

the cleaner winning colors could work also...you can get it in home hardware store or paint store.

if your stairs are white white...try using clorox in warm water. and suck up whatever is left with a rainbow vacuum cleaner..
