Hi! So, I have quite an issue. I need to find a way to express myself and create something. I was thinking that I would write something... just write and see what happens. I do keep a journal, but I was thinking something along the lines of fiction. I just have trouble writing without being self conscious of what I'm saying and being over critical. So, I'm looking to y'all for advice. On writing without wanting to tear my hair out, about refining my writing style so I won't have a reason to tear my hair out, and any other useful advice you might have. Thanks!

  1. this is how i would approach it -

i think once you've formed an idea or story line, just go for it - start writing (almost like brainstorming) without actually reading it yourself till you're finished. just let the ideas flow into words & words into text. don't stop to think about what you've written or whether you need to correct it /proof read it/ modify it... you can even jot down All the ideas (alternatives, variant scenes) that keep coming to you & build on them simultaneously  - just keep the "ink flowing".

then, after your story is over, take some time off, even days if need be. go back to what you've written with a fresh, clear, uncluttered, objective mind as if you are reading somebody else's prose. this is when you can modify & refine what you've written. don't delete too much lest you mar the emotional essence of the story.

once you are completely satisfied, show it to a few others from whom you are sure you can receive genuine criticism & comments. if you are still self-conscious, don't put your name to it - tell them you got it on the net & just wanted their opinion. that way even your friends/family won't feel obliged to keep you in good humor & will give you genuine feedback.

    i'm sure you'll do fine

    all the best

  2. It's been my experience that trying to hard scares away the Muse.  Relax with yourself and you will be surprised how the words will flow.  What you can do is try some brainstorming.  Just type or write whatever it is that you feel.  It doesn't have to make sense.  Hold on to those random thoughts (on paper or in the computer) and one will bloom into a story.  I can almost guarantee it.  I have pages upon pages of handwritten brainstorms.  I do it when I am bored, waiting on the doctor, waiting for the bus.  The more you do it the easier it will be.

Also keep in mind that writing takes practice.  There are very few of us who were born with the innate ability to apply words to paper and immediately recognize it as "worthy" material.

I have been writing for years (around 20 now) and I still have issues with going back and reading what I wrote, especially when it is material that I usually don't do.  I've just learned to look at it from another person's perspective and emotionally detach myself from it.  It sounds hard to do and it is, but it is worth it when you learn how to be unemotional about refining your art.

    Good luck to you!

  3. When your finished with your peice read it over and think about what it sounds like to you, not anyone else. If you like it try introducing it to some close friends or family, they can give constructive critisism and will also spare your feelings, unlike someone who could be a stranger. Good luck.

  4. You know what get's my ideas for stories?

    Pictures.

I look at pictures and a image forms in my mind. It then twists into other stories and then I go from there.

Good luck with expressing yourself =D
