  1. Wow! I am glad that you are getting your eyes checked again. Now, legally, in all states in the US they have to give you your prescription for your glasses. But, some hold it until your insurance has paid for the exam first, which is legal in most states.  Just tell them that you do travel and want a copy of your RX with you for the summer and for your records. You really do not have to explain yourself, though. But you should have a copy of your RX for your own use.  As far as your contact lense RX is concerned, that varies from State to State. Here in CA the doctor does not have to release it to you. The law is different in other states so you might want to ask. At the office where I work, my doctor will release your contact lense RX to you after you have made your follow up visits in your new contacts and you and he agree that all is well and it is time to order your supply. We do not make much on our contacts so we really do not make a big deal out of people getting them elsewhere, but there are some kinds of lenses, especially for astigmatism that you can not buy online or from a cheaper source. We carry some that only private Dr. offices can get becuase they are specially made and specially ordered.  WHen you have astigmatism, you should be given a set of trial lenses to wear and then have a follow up visit. If they are not right and you can not see out of them you should not get a supply of them yet. Your doctor should fit you with diferent lenses or different brands until the fit and vision is correct. This might take a few weeks to get perfected. People with astigmatism need more custome fitting than others do, so be patient! The brand of lense that is best for you might not be the best for someone else. There are many toric lenses out there and it is not something that the patient can just choose. Not all will fit you right, and not all will give you good vision. There are a lot of factors involved other than brand, so you have to trust your doctor on this one.  Before you go in, make sure that you ask them all these same questions and make sure you understand their answers correctly. Ask them if you can wear your lenses a week or so and then come in for a final check before you order your supply. That way if you are not seeing well you can have it fixed before you waste a lot of money on a wrong RX. Good luck and hope you get better vision this time around!
