OK I am trying to install Windows XP on my desktop. I am installing from a CD so the CD is scratched and setup is unable to copy the files shell32.dll and shell.hlp from the CD. The setup runs for some time but then stops saying that shell32.dll file is needed and it cannot proceed. How can I fix this problem fast NOW. I have already formatted the HDD with NTFS file system but this error occurs while it copies the files with that blue screen. Thanks for your help.

  1. Buy a replacement disc for windows xp.  Go to the following:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994, and it will explain how to create setup boot discs.

  2. Try wiping the CD, it's either the scratch, dirt, or both.

You may have to buy a new Windows XP CD.

  3. The disc is damaged you'll have to replace it.
