Wow--first look seems quite expensive.  Please note carefully the dates given in all of the answers here.  Some of them do NOT correspond to what you requested!

That said, to get it under $1000, it looks like you're going to need *some* flexibility--if possible.  For example, I see Air Transat on YHZ-FRA for $868 CAD total, but leaving the 16th and return the 31st.  From FRA, Bahn.de has train specials often.  I've seen some as cheap as €19 one way recently within Germany and to bordering countries.

I also looked at getting you in via other cities that might be cheaper, but that doesn't look good when everything's added up.
