Help find an August travel spot for two "outdoorsy", "nature-loving" friends?

I have a friend who is in her mid 50's (20 yrs older than me) whom I respect very much and whose company I enjoy. I would like to take her on a trip to thank, her for the many things she has done to make my life better. Important factors:

Trip must be in mid August, roughly 5 nights

She is an "outdoorsy" type who loves nature and animals

She loves to take leisurely nature walks but health limitations will not permit intense physical hikes.

Prefer a location in the upper midwest, northwest, or canada.

Has already been to upper Michigan and through Minnesota.

We will fly from Detroit.

We will rent a car and stay in hotel(s).

Do you have a suggestion? Please share!

  1. Hello!

Why don't you go to Europe, Croatia? you'll have the best time, especially since you say that she loves nature and animals! visite www.slunjcica.hr and see their offers. Although it's better to send an e-mail, they give you all the info, offers and photos.

  2. Glacier National Park

Yellowstone National Park/Grand Teton National Park

Google them and you will see pictures

Stay at the lodges within the park....they are old and grand!

Nature and Photography Vacations in the Canadian Arctic

The Land of the Midnight sun is teeming with life and a Canadian Arctic nature vacation offers something for everyone: naturalists, birdwatchers, photographers, adventurers or people who just want an unforgettable nature vacation and wildlife experience. A true Arctic adventure!

Naturalists will have the opportunity to see Arctic hares, wolves, wolverines and fearless caribou, which have been photographed as close as twenty feet from our camp! In fact, the Beverly Lake caribou herd which number over 200,000 migrate past our Mosquito Lake location. On Dubawnt Lake and Mosquito Lake the muskox herd totals approximately 200 of these majestic animals.

Bird watchers can spot peregrine falcons in their nearby rock-top nesting areas as well as bald and golden eagles, Arctic loons and a wide variety of other species that call the Arctic home. The summer months are excellent viewing times as many of these migrant birds return to nest in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut terrain.

Nature vacations north of the tree line to the Arctic tundra are hauntingly beautiful and the adventure of a lifetime. Your summer Canadian nature vacation to The Land of the Midnight Sun is one of the last true wilderness frontiers on the planet for its untouched and unspoiled tundra flora, mammals and birds.

Simply choose your location and we will take care of everything else, from flight arrangements to use of all of our brand new equipment. For the adventurous type, our exciting Arctic trips are sure to thrill. Set out for a three or four day trip from Mosquito Lake, Northwest Territories to Dubawnt Lake, Nunavut along the Dubawnt river chain. You will travel by Zodiac boat over 100 miles, camping at night under the midnight sun and fishing various lakes and rapids during the day along the way. We will set up shoreline lunches and guests can take short hiking trips to explore the beautiful tundra.

    Aurora Borealis Photography

The Canadian Arctic is a paradise for nature photographers, and a vacation in late August offers an excellent opportunity for photographers interested in capturing the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights. During the summer months, although you can see the Aurora Borealis, the strong twilight, or midnight sun, can interfere with viewing the stunning displays. However, in mid-to-late August, the temperatures are still pleasant, and as the twilight softens the sky dances, bathed in luminous swirling colours.

Aurora Borealis means "northern lights" and is a shimmering atmospheric phenomenon that occurs commonly above 60 degrees north latitude. Visitors have a chance to see the almost endless array of forms created by the auroras, including arches, bands, streamers, clouds and flames.

  4. The national parks all have trails and sights for all levels of ability. Yellowstone would be lovely at that time and you would probably still be seeing baby animals. You can either camp or they have hotels there. I'm not sure the other parks have hotels in them, but they probably have some just outside.

From Moab, Utah you would have access to Arches, Canyonlands, and Goblin Valley to see some awesome cool rock formations.

And of course here in Star Valley, Wyoming is a tourist hotspot at that time of year because of Targee, Grey's River, Palisades, Cottonwood Lake, ect. We even have a pack of wolves behind our house most of the time.
