i know that the bottowm of the food chain is grass because grass is a producer. An example of a primary consumer would be an antelope because it only consumer grass. But besides a lion, what consumes an antelope?

  1. Leopards, large constricting snakes, cheetahs, monitor lizards, hyenas just to name a few.

  2. Hard to define a food chain start and stop. You have to look at all the stuff going into the entire process. Let's start with the ground. Without soil, and the nutrients in soil, grass and small plants won't grow. To get nutrients into the soil, bacteria, and fungus, work on dead matter to break it into components that may be used by plants. Thr grass is consumed by and herbivore, but try for something a bit smaller, like a rabbit. Rabbit's are eaten by wild cats, snakes, coyotes, wolves, hawks and humans. If you want to go for another predator of the primary predator, look at wild cats, like bobcats. These guys also are prey to wolves.

Let's look at the snake that eats the rabbit, well, he's eaten by the hawk. Other hawks, and different snakes also prey on these birds.

Either way, animals will die, whether by predation, or natural death. The only thing to prey upon the dead, are scavengers, and bacteria/fungi. So you have hyenas, most wild dogs and cats, raccoons, etc. These are all scavengers. But the ultimate result is everything is eaten by bacteria and fungi. The entire food chain (which is actually a circle) begins and ends with bacertia.

By the way, depending on the area and species of antelope, humans, hyenas, vultures, hawks, and cheetas are all predators of the antelope

  3. It's not -just- grass on the bottom of a food chain, its anything that can photosynthesize - and rarely some things that can't. Grass, other plants, and photoplankton all qualify.

To answer your question directly, a cheetah might eat an antelope?

It's probably easier to use some other animal as your primary consumer. Let's say, for example, we use grasshoppers are our primary consumer. What eat's grasshoppers? Birds, rabbits, moles, bats, fish, lizards, snakes....the list is a lot longer.
