Help for British citizen?

arrived .U.S 37YRS ago legally on visitors visa. Followed all the rules applied for extension, and adjustment of status. 37 yrs later the D H S I N S cannot get it right.I lost, or should I say my i 94 was stolen in1973. All reported. Have American wife and , six American born children. Was first responder at 9/11, am paramedic I N S says the piece of paper does not exist anymore, but they are holding me to produce it.Or. Possible deportation. My wife just had a stroke over all this. Where does this madness end.Anyone else been through this?
