so I accidentally put in a fork in my disposal. I heard a funny noise and shut off the switch. I was able to shimmy the fork out, but the disposal doesn't work now. It hums, but that's it. Is it broken? Is there something simple I can do to fix it?

  1. ditto JaceNess.

Press the red "reset" button under the sink.

  2. that happens to ours all the time. my mom always fixes it within ~~2-3 minutes. not sure how. but its not broken.

  3. Yes the motor is trying to run to rotate but is either broken or sounds like something else is stuck in it to keep it from working a bone or something is causing it not to work ...you could try to take loose from the sink and check it out to see if you can see anything wrong then reinstall it we did and found that the fork had caused the food and there was also a toothpick in it that caught where the fork i guess forced it into it and locked it but we took all that out and it worked for us if you know how but make sure there is no elect to it before removing it.

  4. take a broom handle and stick down into the disposal and pry on the blade so they move, then take out the broom handle and try it again, keep repeteing this intil you get it freed up. also push the reset button on disposal. good luck

  5. sounds like it's still jammed up... i'd double check it with a flash light to ensure there's nothing else around the cylinder that has it caught up....

then unplug it, or reset it... there should be a red button underneath the disposal unit, press it in and run it again

be sure not to let it run more than a few seconds if it's still jammed, you could burn the motor up and have alot more problems

  6. Sounds like the motor over got too hot being in a bind.A circuit breaker may have tripped so check your breaker panel for a tripped breaker.

Let it cool down if a breaker is not tripped and try it then.

It could be ruined though but I doubt it.
