Question:

Help for maintenance on silver flute??

I have a brand new solid silver flute and I love it and clean it every day. I accidentally left it out once, and silver tarnishes quickly, so should I buy another silver cleaning cloth to clean it? I hate the look of the tarnished parts and the cloth that came with it doesnt get it off. I also heard about putting carbon papers in the case to prevent tarnish but is that good for the flute? and where can get some?

  1. There ARE tarnish removing cloths - but you do not want one - they are DANGEROUS to use on a flute.  The chemicals and abrasives in them will flake off into your pads and mechanism, on a microscopic level, and you will RUIN them.  Use a microfiber cloth to wipe off fingerprints daily.  Yes,  leaving your lfute OUT of the case will make it tranish c=faster - don't I know it! - I am a porfessional flutist, and often will leave my flute out on a special peg in my sudio, because I am taking a break, and will be back later - and even those few minutes our hours add up.  I wait until my flute goes into the shop for its annaul COA (clean/oil/adjust) - and it is cleaned while disassembled.

You can get 3M Anti_tarnish strips to go into your case - they are good.  Go to any place that sells silver - a jeweler, Home Depot might have them, too - or go to www.fluteworld.com

Congratulations on the new flute!  I hope it really inspires you to {PRACTICE and do well.
