Question:

Help for my rat!?

Ok so my rat is sick right now. She has some mystery illness that the vets can’t solve. A few days ago she had a hard time walking. And she had no interest in her food or water. She was also always sleeping and not being alert at all, by keeping her eyes barely open. But today I’ve been hand feeding her fruits and all natural yogurts that she will eat small portions of. And every now and again she will walk over to the food I set in her cage. I have to give her small amounts of water using a syringe which she seems to not mind. And she is walking a little more and a little better. She is also more alert; she will keep her eyes open and look around. So far what I have been doing seems to help. But she is a little thin and I need her to gain weight.

So my questions are:

1.How can you make a rat gain weight (trying to do it in a healthy way) without making her eat any hard foods?

2.Does anyone have anymore advice on what I can do to help her?

Thanks!

  1. *Thing*? How rude. She took her rat to the vet, no luck.

Hmm.. Thin and trouble walking. Does she have any trouble breathing? Did the vet check her heart, to see if it's going too fast? If this vet can't figure out what's wrong with her, it might be a good idea to find a better vet.

On this rat forum I go to, some people say that a good way to fatten up a rat is to feed it baby oatmeal with lactose free milk.

  2. first of all   RAT!!!!!!!!!!

take that thing to the vet

  3. keep up with the fruits and veggies. try crunching up some rat pellet or block food and mixing it with warm water until it's at a consistency that you can feed her with the syringe. the block food is full of vitamins. if that doesn't work, see if you can get a vitamin supplement from the vet or pet store that you can mix into her water.

    good luck!

  4. I think I know exsacly what is happining. My sister had a rat, which had the same symtoms as you descibed. about a month later the vet found out that tumers were starting to grow. she had to be put to sleep cuz 1 month after the vet found out she had 4 tumers. This is normal. that is why I do not want to get a rat. I will just get hurt. Rats do not last long. I am sorry that you had to find out this....

                                Best wishes and GOOD luck
