  1. You should wash all dark clothes with cold water and all whites with hot or warm water. Drying clothes doesn't really matter.

  2. Any clothes that say WASH IN COLD WATER are saying that for a reason.  However, anything marked WASH IN WARM WATER can also be washed in cold water, just not hot water.  If there are a lot of them separate into 2 load, 1 for warm, 1 for cold.  If not, wash them all in cold, but I would recommend a detergent that says it's for use in cold as well as warm or hot water. (Read back of box or bottle.).  Hope this helps.

  3. Whites - hot water unless you don't want them to shrink...then warm or cold

Darks - cold if you don't want them to fade or shrink

  4. Everyone else's answers are solid, but, incomplete.

Washing clothes is also about the weight of the fabric,,, not just the color & temperature listed on the label.

I don't wash blue jeans with shirts. Don't mix towels with bras/delicates.

I also make sure to wash in warm the following: sheets, underwear, panties, towells & anything else that has higher amount of shedded skin or bodily scum on it.  Cold water does not remove this well.

In summary... you must consider the dirt level, color, temperature & fabric weight when washing clothes together.

  5. Wash and dry according to the lowest temperature on the tag.

Example: One shirt tag has warm, the other had cold. Do cold. The cold water won't hurt the warm water shirt.

Same with the dryer temperature. Lower temperature won't hurt anything, but warmer ones can.

  6. For dark clothes, I usually use cold to keep colors true.  For towels I use hot water.  For delicates I use cold or warm.  (the warm water setting on my washer is more tepid than warm)   As far as drying, I don't use anything but warm for drying any of my clothes.  It takes a bit longer, but I don't have problems with shrinking clothing.  Towels I dry on high and delicates I hang to dry.
