Start as an intern, at one of the large Advertising Agencies, in your city and work your way up the ladder.

the good thing about copywriting is that you can work from home.  I do.

Sites like Deb Ng's Freelance Writing posts job leads daily for free and that can help you out a lot.  Also check Craigslist Writing Jobs ads for major cities.

I work for three firms currently - one out of San Fran, one in Phoenix and one in Spain.  You have to pay self-employment taxes, but it's worthwhile to be able to avoid paying gas for a lengthy commute!
