I live in NYC, and i've been playing the piano for some time so i can read notes. I am interested in learning to play the electric guitar...could anyone point me in the right direction ? From maybe where to look for purchasing not-so-expensive guitars/amplifiers and some reference texts or materials for learning ? Thanks!

  1. Your best bet is to buy  a gig pack Ibanez, yamaha, fender, epiphone ect. That way you get the guitar, amp,and and all you need to get started for around $200-$300 then if you decide to give it up you wont have a lot of money invested. here is a website to give you some ideas.

    http://www.music123.com/Guitar-Value-Pac...

There are  a lot of good teaching videos out there to help you but just knowing how to play the Piano gives you the upper hand.in learning.    Happy playing

  2. If you don't want to spend a whole lot of money, you can try checking out a pawn shop. Some of them have really good guitars. I got my guitar from one, and they have price ranges from about $90-$300. Just try to find a decent brand is the main part. I prefer Fender personally, but there are several good ones. Kustom amps are also pretty good.

  3. Actually dont check the pawn shop. Every 'newbie' I have ever known to go to a Pawn shop was ripped off!!!! They paid TOO much money for just a piece of c**p that was either untunable or just bad...like a sears guitar. There CAN be good deals there, but again...you have to have an experienced eye to find them, and those guys know what they are, and they have them overpriced, and you have to haggle with them big time on the good stuff. If you find a Fender per say, at a GREAT price, it probably has a warped neck...unrepairable or unoticable to a novice. Also, most of the time, you can find a Fender Squire (beginner Fender) for the SAME price or more as you can get it new (200 for the  guitar/amp/bag/tuner/dvd/strap/cable etc! at link below NEW) I see them for 250 to 300 most of the time!!!...SO be VERY careful about buying used, or pawn. I TOTALLY agree with the guy that told you to buy a value pack. Another website that carries them is: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/S...

This is a Fender kit for $199, that includes a Tuner/softCase/instructional DVD etc. Great deal. This is the CHEAPEST deal on a good beginner guitar kit as well. If you want to spend more for more quality, check out the epiphone kits at this site...they are nice too.

Ideas to maybe help you choose what kit:

Fender Kit: Blues/Country/General Rock/ to Classic Rock

Epiphone LP or SG: Hard Rock to Grunge... & ALL ROCK some modern country like Big and Rich

Ibenez: Metal...speed leads (floating bridge is a plus) Big Hair Bands/VanHalen/Stevie Via...good 'lead' guitars

    Good luck! HAPPY SHOPPING!!! :-)

  4. I apologize I don't know NY stores, but music  stores often have good deals on guitar/amp packages.  They certainly are beginner equipment, but that's alright if you're just beginning.  The stores often buy and sell used gear, so it's worth looking around before you buy anything.  I know I've sold multiple (high-end) guitars on Craigslist.org in the SF Bay Area.  So you might look there.  Good luck.

  5. Well, i got started by my brother and i also had some music experience. So if you find someone that has experience with electric guitar that helps alottt. Ummmm... and i would start of with a first act accoustic. Then go to the electric guitar. I got my electric guitar at a flea market. Hope i helped!!

  6. Ebay will get you the best guitar for the money. This site can help you develop a better understanding of the fretboard. Best of luck and I hope this helps..
