  1. The short answer... Concede the bet, get him to give you the network access key. It will be much quicker, easier, and legal.

Network cracking is possible, but not for the faint of heart. To do it quickly and efficiently, it would probably mean going out and buying more than one network card (one to sniff the data, one to help generate packets, and re-inject those packets) and even then is not a guaranteed thing. If it is a private network for just him, chances are it won't be generating a lot of traffic for you to sniff, so will mean leaving your computer for a long time sniffing for data. . .

And all that's before we even start to delve into the legality of it. Although the software exists, and is out there, in many countries it is illegal to have it.

And then there is the matter of "other" networks. Although you will be setting out to capture data on your friends network who has given you permission, you will inevitably end up capturing some data from other peoples networks, which could potentially land you in a lot of trouble with them too.

If you knew what you were doing in the first place, accepting a challenge to "hack" a friends network may be fun. If you don't know what you're doing, it's going to end up a cost and a hassle you don't need, and was not a challenge you should have accepted.

You'd probably be better off just guessing (have you tried "password" or his own name?) than getting your self caught up with this type of security software. It is just not user friendly sort of stuff, it was designed for network admin's to test the strength of their own networks, so most of it is command line, linux based stuff anway.

  2. I have no idea, but hacking is hard.

  3. BackTrack.

    Be careful...
