  1. Root canal is a form of treatment for abscessed teeth, so unless you've HAD a Root Canal treatment you can't have a root canal 'crack'.

Quite often, when a tooth is decayed (wether you can see it or not), the tooth enamel is weakend, and the tooth begins to fracture. If additional pressure is placed on the tooth (even by pressing hard with a finger), it could break part of the tooth off. Trust me! I've done it!

I had a small dot like thing on my tooth a few months back, and like you- saw a hair line crack. I decided to test if it was really a crack, so i pressed a finger hard against it (my first molar on the left hand side of the bottom jaw). With that simple push of a finger, half of the molar broke off, under my finger, and if showed that not only was there a tiny dot of decay there, but the entire tooth looked horribly decayed.

Unfortunatley for me, being an idiot- I chose not to see a dentist, and it developed into a very serious periapical abscess (at the root of the tooth) and required an emergency extraction and drainage months later.

Make sure you go and see a dentist asap.

It may not be a fracture line, but if it is- it usually indicates the tooth is weak. A small dot on the surface of a tooth could be worse on the inside. Only a dentist can really detect what's wrong.

An x-ray may be needed to see if there's an infection (pain usually indicates there's an infection- abscess either periodontal- gum abscess, or periapical - root abscess).

Abscesses are an extremley serious issue, which NEED to be dealt with. If they're left to get worse over a period of time, they can be extremley serious even life threatening (which is at a much later stage, but trust me.. I came extremley close to that- and I didn't even have pain!)

ANY pain is a serious issue. Even if it hurts when you just touch it.

(Don't touch it would be my advice) but all the same, any pain is a warning sign. Any pain at all!!!!

    Go do the right thing.

    See a dentist.
