  1. if you can find one at a reasonable price and can handle being woken up to your son's new alarm clock, go for it! my husband gave his son a set of drums before he left his ex, so when she went to the bar at night and woke up with a hangover he could annoy her with them. haha. (ok, so that wasnt the sole reason, just a perk.)

  2. No its not too early. My son was four when we got him a mini drum set,he is now soon to be six and now he is very good at it,he has also taken an interest in the piano and is quite good at that as well.Getting him started early is a good thing while his little mind is still developing.

  3. Encourage him!  Have as serious a discussion as you can have with him about the responsibility that comes with taking lessons and practicing.  If he wants to do this and you don't think it's a whim of some sort, let him play!  Music is a wonderful thing and if he wants to learn, he'll be the better for it.

  4. NO! Drums are NOT junk! They can actually help with maths and counting! And to learn an instrument from a younger age is good. It can encourage a gifted child. YES! Buy those drums!

Edit: Despite my name, drums are my life. I think drums can help you loose weight too!

  5. Its never too early, I wish I could of started playing the drums at 6.

If you click the link: http://www.youtube.com/results.php?searc...

You'll find videos of kids playing the drums.  Alot of them are pretty good for their age.  Maybe you could try paying for the lessons first and see if he likes it then buy the set after.  I think some places with let you have a free 'trial' lesson.

As for drumsets you could buy a used one or Musicians Friend and Guitar Center (links below):

    http://www.guitarcenter.com/Acoustic-Set...

    http://www.musiciansfriend.com/navigatio...

Both sites sell complete drums sets with cymbals and hardware (cymbal stands) starting from $200 with free shipping I think. Both sites have customer reviews but I find the reviews on Musicians Friend are better.  Also when looking at buying drumsets dont rely on the pictures as they can fool you, I made that mistake once, read the description carefully as the pictures often show a complete drumset, but sometimes times this isn't the case and they don't include the cymbals.

Once you have a kit, try and ask someone at a music store or the music teacher if they can tune the drums for you so that they don't sound like junk when your kid plays them.

    Hope this helps. Cheers.

  6. My seven year old just got a set of drums for Christmas.  We started out with a little drum when he first started asking, he played it all the time, now we got him the drum set, and though at first I thought it would be some terrible racket, but he is getting good, starting to keep a beat well, it's really neat, and his brother and sister get into it as well.

6 is not too early.  We got his set at Walmart for like $170.00, if you have a walmart in your area check on them there.

    Good luck!

  7. definitely not.  if he's like any 6 year old boy he has a lot of energy to get out. drums are perfect.  dont buy a piece of junk but dont buy anything thats gonna break as soon as he hits hard.  as far as getting lessons, go for it.  the younger you are when you are trying to learn something, the more likely you are to memorize it.  i say get it for him.  good luck.

PS.  you are gonna have to put up with him being very loud and sounding bad for awhile. but itll be worth it.

  8. Not at all! He is old enough to start learning now but I would look into the lessons first for 2 reasons...1. he'll really enjoy them & 2. he will be playing them somewhere else! :)

  9. My 4yo has a drum set we got from a music store at a good price.  He loves playing.  Anytime your child has a musical interest, I'd say follow it.  You may or may not be able to find a teacher willing to work with his age.  If you cannot find one, then just let him experiment and play until he's old enough and enjoy the beautiful music he makes.

  10. As the grandmother of two wonderful six year old grandsons, I'd say get them for him.  You can get him a nice used set - which will be cheaper on your pocketbook.  It is said that children who actively pursue musical instruments as young children excel in school--perhaps it is because they are more disciplined or maybe it triggers something in the brain to be successful.  I'll bet either you or your husband are probably musically inclined!  Have a great day--and if you get him the drums--get enough ear plugs to go around.  haha

  11. encourage the boy to play the drums you may have a rockstar at your house and you dont even know it.

  12. it is never too early to learn an instrument..especially drums, if you consider this GET HIM LESSONS.  if he has enough of a work ethic and is really set on it, consider it.

  13. if he is careful with his stuff, then u should but my friends brother has an anger problem and kicked the lining out of it

  14. I think you are correct. If you dont have the money anyways tell him. Go to guarge sells and stuff and see what they have. It is to early for this I think. My brother wanted drums at age 6 he is seven and he says he wants a real airplane for his eigth birthday..he wants to be a piolet. A week ago he wanted to be a NFL player in football..he is just a kid.

  15. I say get the boy some drums.  I can understand you not wanting to spend money on something he'll play with for a week and then be on to something else, but on the other hand you don't have to buy a professional drum kit for a 6 yr old.  First find a music store or school that gives drum lessons.  The music teacher there will probably have some advice on what kind of set would be appropriate, or if your son needs the set right away at all.  If you're having trouble finding somewhere that gives lessons, call your local band teacher at the high school.  If he/she doesn't do private lessons, they know someone who does.

  16. My son is 5 and wanted drums for Christmas.  He also plays with an old guitar at my mom's house so for Christmas I bought him a "child" guitar for like $30.00 at Wal-Mart.  With the drums wal-mart had this little set in the toy isle that had the big drum, two small side drums and a cymbol, cost like $20.00.  I let him bang on those right now.

My husband and I are signing him up for lessons this summer, so he will play "better" drums and guitar at the shop and we decided that if he still is into the drums or guitar by 8 we will by him "nice" ones then.

But this allowed us to give him something musical that he is interested in, then allows him to try and it does not cost alot.

  17. it is never too early for musical enrichment. music lessons also help with math. drums are GREAT! just invest in a bottle of tylenol and some earplugs for yourself, too.
