ok the question is Why is it necessary for the cell membrane to be made up of lipids?

  1. Because certain proteins and enzymes are fat soluble and can get through the cell wall only because they can dissolve in it and other substances which can not do this have to stay out.  

    Semi permeable membranes are selectively permeable.


  2. Well, the cell membrane contains the phospholipid bilayer which, if i remember correctly, regulates what passes through the cell, and keeps what is needed inside the cell, inside, and what isn't needed inside the cell outside the cell.

    So, basically, lipids make up the bilayer, which is essential part of the cell membrane.  You can even think of the bilayer as the cell membrane itself.

  3. I think so that nutrients can enter the cell and waste products can be transfered out
