  1. Just translate the words into a math expression:

    the sum of (add these up)

    negative 14,     (-14)

    a number,      (+  x)

    and 6            (+  6)

    is -5.             (= -5)

    what is the number? i.e, solve for x

    So your equation is:

    -14 + x + 6 = -5

    Add or subtract numbers to both sides to get only x on one side of the equation:

    -14 +14 + x + 6 -6 = -5 +14 -6

    x = -5 +14 -6

    x = 3

    Plug this into your original equation to make sure it works:

    -14 + 3 + 6 = -5

    This is correct, so you've double checked that x is equal to 3.  Hope that helps.

  2. (-14) + X + 6 = -5

    x=3
