  1. Boys at this age are typically into building things, playing with cars (or other vehicles), and hero play.  If you're babysitting at his house, he should have all the toys there to have loads of fun.  All he really needs is for you to be engaged with his play or his "story."  Build a fire station with legos or mega blocks then use the trucks and action figures to pretend a scenario, for example.  Really, just follow his lead but extend the play by adding a new twist or asking a question.  Also make sure to get some gross-motor play - go outside and play tag or take him to a park for climbing, sliding, and swinging (don't know if you're allowed to transport him).  If you want to get a little educational, do some reading, talk about ABC's and 123's, maybe even help him write his name - it's time to start getting ready for kindergarten, and knowing these things will help.  If you're comfortable with doing "arts and crafts," do a lot of coloring and drawing, cutting and pasting, and even play dough - these activities exercise the small muscles in the hands and prepare children for writing.  There are tons of activity ideas online, just a simple search will get you there.  I've even found free Superman coloring pages for my son, just need to print them out, forget buying coloring books.  After you spend some time with him, you'll get to know him and his abilities and interests, then you can go from there.

I just saw your additional info - as far as taking him to a park (or other places), make sure this is OK with mom.  There may be some issues with car insurance and liability.  What were to happen if you get in an accident and the child is seriously injured while in your care.  Mom could sue your pants off.  Also, he should still be sitting in a car seat (or booster if he's big for his age).  Make sure you know how to use these.  Charging rates?  Kind of depends on what all is expected of you and how much time is involved.  Will you take care of the boy 3 days a week for 8 hours or just a couple of hours on Friday night?  Are you expected to feed the kid?  Is mom going to feed you as well?  Is that considered part of pay?  If you're just babysitting a few hours on the weekend, I would ask for around $10.00 - $20.00 an hour, depending on what part of the country you live in and the food situation (will they order a large pizza to feed the both of you out of their pocket?).  If you're going to be an extensive-time manny, keep it closer to that $10.00 -$12.00 an hour range but perhaps ask for some mad-money for gas, ice cream, occassional lunch at McDonald's, but still expect that they will feed you if you're going to be with him through at least lunch and afternoon snack.

  2. if their is a pool around take him swimming, young kids love swimming.  i say take him to a park,  make sure you play with him not just watch him play,  you will have a more enjoyable time if you do things with the kid/s.  The kid/s will also like you more.  Do things that he would not normally do, unless his mom says he needs to stay with a specif schedule.  You will come up with ideas once you start to babysit.  he will also give you ideas.  just make sure its nothing dangerous.

  3. If you have any old toy cars you could let him play with that and now there's really neat summer toys at Dollar General for preschoolers. My little brother loves the toys there and I bet he will too. The most expensive things for summer toys there are only around 1 and 2 dollars. Good luck!
