  1. 1st of all...why cant you just answer her question? if you cant even figure out why you want a horse, i dont think you really want one. Its a huge responsibility. answer that question first, then ill get back to you :)

  2. Have you considered your financial situation?  For many people the cost of a horse, even if you're not involved with showing, is out of their range.  A sound, well broken horse will usually cost a minimum of $1,200 and once you look into costs for a good show animal then you're easily surpassing $5,000.  Then consider the cost of boarding, shots, wormer, feed, supplements, vet costs, farrier costs, tack costs, show/club/breed association fees, ect.  Also, you'll probably end up needing lessons, which unless you're lucky start at $30 for a half-hour session in many areas.  Your mom might not be able to afford a horse.  Also, "A lot" of money is pretty vague.

  3. Maybe, your mom might think you aren't ready to take on the responsibilities that comes with owning a horse!!!! Just prove to her that you are ready and are responsible enough.

Try taking care of some horses at the barn so feeding, grooming, exercising, mucking out stalls etc. If you can do that and still have time to do homework, keep your grades up and still have time to hang out and have free time your mom will probably reconsider a horse.

  4. The first answer has a point.  You're asking us to tell you WHY YOU want a horse?

but I sorta see what you mean...  you need good reasons that your mom will care about.

I would want a horse so that I could do what I want with it.  when riding other people's horses, I'm limited to what they say I can do... if I want to jump and they tell me no, then I can't.  But if I get my own horse, I can jump it if I want to.

I also want a horse so that I can take it places when I want...  I could go on trail rides off the property of my stable.  I could go to horse shows.

I could learn and grow with my horse...  I could have it for many years and we could progress together.  it's not like riding someone else's horse for a couple months then having to ride something else...  you will know your horse and have the consistency so that you won't always be starting over with teaching the horse what you want it to do.  instead, you'll be able to teach the horse while you're learning new things too!

As another answer mentioned, a horse is a lot of money.  I'm sure you do have money saved up, but I'm also sure that it is not enough money to buy the horse let alone feed and stable it and keep it shod and vetted and dewormed and vaccinated and everything else.  And, the best reason to want a horse is because you want to show it, but if you're gonna show, that's a few hundred dollars a weekend.

So know that your mom isn't just being mean... she just doesn't want to commit to this thing before she's ready and you're ready.  And she wants to know that you're committed to it before she invests... you may be excited about it now, but once you've had it for a couple months, you might not be nearly as interested.  and after a couple years, your mom doesn't want to be feeding and stabling this thing that you don't care about anymore.
