  1. There are two sides to this argument. Having a pet can teach responsibility, on the other hand, she is quite young and a pet is for life. It's not like a new toy, so I really can understand why your mother might not be comfortable with the idea. Tell her that it might help her with responsibilities but also tell her you will chip in, too.

If not, respect her decision and try again in a few years!

  2. Before you start you pet purchase campaign, be sure that you really want a pet and are prepared to take full responsibility for it.

Think carefully about the kind of animal your household can accommodate and look after. You might be dying to own a pony, but if you live in the city it is probably not the best idea.

Research as much as you can about the animal of your choice. The more knowledge you have, the easier it is to persuade your parents to put some genuine thought to it.

Before approaching your parents, make a list of all possible objections they may have. Try to come up with reasonable answers to all of their concerns.

Be persistent with you request, but always remain calm and polite. Tantrums and tears will only prove that you are not mature enough to look after a pet.

Consider getting an after-school job that involves looking after animals. You could try dog-walking, helping out at your locale stable, or volunteering at an animal shelter. This will help your parents feel more confident about your ability to care for your proposed pet.

If you have a friend who owns the kind of animal you want, invite her over to talk pet care with your parents.

Start off by thinking small. If your parents are adamant that you can't have that guinea pig you want, ask them to consider letting you have a smaller animal such as a goldfish. If you take good care of the small animal over a long period of time, they may reconsider letting you buy the guinea pig you want for you sister. Alternatively, you may discover you and your fishy friend are happy.

I hope this helps and good luck!
