"Adieu my friends affectionate adieu

Surely there is another Lot.

there is [ _____] home for me

Where I shall rest, remembering not

The sorrow of this day.

O, [ ___] home [ ______] of rest and peace

The [ ________]

Where [ _______]

And [ ________] meet again."

This is on 6x's grandfather's tombstone and I would like to have the full poem restored. Thank for any help!

  1. I don't suppose you have a photo you can post?

Have you tried taking a rubbing off of it?

Take photo's in different lights because that can make a difference.

    Where is the grave?

  2. I can reconstruct part, it is from the early romantic period, after the first Great Awakening.  Biblical images abound. "O, happy home, Jerusalem of rest and peace." I'll keep working on it, and look through my sources from the period.

It has marked similarity to "Land of Rest" written by Joseph Bromehead in 1795.

The metre is irregular, unless syllables are elided.  It begins 10.8. ____(8 or 10), 9.6. (11, as reconstructed),  This is highly unlikely to be quoted from a Hymn, unless rewritten.
