Help identifying a tree with red berries that is common?

this stuff is everywhere and grows really fast. gets red berries. we always called them "snake berries" when i was young and said they were poisonous. do you know anything about this plant and if the berries are edible? thanks.

here's a pic i took of a tree. i am in new york state.
