  1. The most important phrases might be ...

    Sprechen Sie Englisch? ==> Do you speak English?

    Danke schon (DAHN-kuh Schon) => Thank you very much

    Bitte (BIT-tuh) ==> Please/You're Welcome.

    Guten Tag! (GOO-ten tahk) ==> Hello!/Good day!

    Auf Wiedersehen! (owf VEE-der-zane) ==> Good-bye!

    Check out the link below for some more useful phrases.

    I've alway though about Rosetta Stone but have never used it. They sell the software in international airports so if you're carrying a laptop on your trip, that's something worth picking up. It's good for increasing your vocabulary because it uses pictures to reinforce the meaning.

    As for travel phrases, you're best bet might to to pick up a phrase book at your local bookstore or look to download language software to an mp3 player that you can listen to while driving/exercising/cooking/etc. There's also some sites on the web that offer lessons with audio files which is the 2nd link.

    Have a great trip!

  2. I just got back from Germany in April, I went for 2 weeks. I barely spoke any German and went were they barely speak English. Most of them are very patient and will try to communicate with you. The younger people had some English in school but are embarrassed to use it because they don't want to say it wrong. So they understand you are doing the same! You will get by fine but just listen some words are similar to our own. Like when talking about your car they call it an auto! Just relax and listen and speak slow!

  3. Hi. I am italian native speaker and moved to Germany 6 ys. ago without speaking a word of German. 16 months later I got my first job here and one in which I needed to use German.

    As soon as I got here I started a course at the Volkshochschule (popular university): I attended 2 hours classes every evening, 4x a week. After one here I passed my certificate exam (Zertifikat Deutsch) with flying colors. I could have done even faster, but I was working during the day, so no time for that.

    You need to do regularly your homework and study regularly, but it works out well. I was watching german Tv to improve my understanding and looked for german speaking friends.

    I think it's much easier to learn a language if you are in the country where it is spoken, since you learn a lot also passively.

    Goethe Insitut and Universities are also very good addresses  to look for German courses for foreigners.

    Intensive courses to reach a basic knowledge can last as little as one month (the girlfriend of a co-worker is attending such a crash-course)

  4. There is a course called "Pimsleur". Its available on cd's, etc.

    Its a great system. I learned enough Italian to communicate with Italians that spoke no English.

    Try this:

  7. How much are you paying???? This was a joke....

    What you need to know? Ask me I can answer some questions. I teach in Texas by the international school Berlitz German Language my students was there only for 2 weeks every single day but after that, they all speak good German. You can buy also some CD with book and try to practice.

  8. the second person is right. you only need to know basic phrases, plus the younger germans speak english. they teach kids over there english starting like middleschool age.so don't worry=]

    but if you still want to learn more than those basic ones you can email me at soccerxchick091@yahoo.com

  9. Hallo Tiffany,

    Wie geht's dir?  How are you?  I spent 2005 living and working in the south of Germany.  It was an awesome experience.  My best advice to you is to learn as much as you can before  you go, and try to use whatever you know when you get there.  Your German will be pretty bad at first but you will be surprised how quickly people will help you catch on.  Just force yourself to use it even if it is wrong.

    I got so excited about learning languages that when I came back I created a PC program to help others learn the basics quickly.  It is still a bit in the trial phase, but you can check out my shareware download at  www.zesez.com.  There are also links to German news websites and radio stations.

    Good luck and let me know what you think of the program as I am always looking for input to make it more fun and useful.

    email ze@zesez.com

    Viel Spass (have fun!)

    Matt
